STAR Material

The biocompatible, non-degradable STAR® material originates in the University of Washington, Seattle, USA. STAR material is made of soft and flexible, medical-grade silicone which conforms to the eye anatomy. The material’s unique structure is composed of an organised network of hollow spheres which has a positive impact on drainage.

This porous geometry promotes the bio-integration of surrounding tissues into the material which sustains drainage efficacy over time. The porous design encourages a natural flow speed which reduces the incidence of fibrosis and minimises scarring, thus increasing implant durability.

The pictures to the right were taken 6 months after implantation of the STARflo glaucoma drainage device in rabbits. The picture on the left shows exceptional bio-integration of the STAR material, with surrounding tissue colonizing the porous structure, while preserving in vivo drainage efficacy. The picture on the right confirms there was no encapsulation, as shown by the absence of a surrounding fibrous capsule or continuous macrophage or a fibroblast layer.
